Problem Statement

How might we redesign and declutter the activity feature to increase the usage rate?

Discovery

the Low usage rate

The Activity feature is crucial for delivering notifications, yet it has a very low usage rate.

🤔 But why?

After interviewing some of our users, we discovered the issue:
Users feel
overwhelmed by the cluttered page, leading to a poor user experience.

As a result, people quit using the Activity feature

Analysis

Causes of Clutter

Original Design

😵‍💫 Lack of information Status

Users repeatedly check messages due to the absence of a read/unread distinction, causing confusion.

🤔 Inconsistent icons

Mixed icon styles (linear and image) reduce visual consistency

😵 Accumulation of Messages

Users are unable to delete messages, leading to an overwhelming accumulation.

🥱 Unorganized Information

A long, unorganized list causes important messages to get buried among other messages

First iteration

Quick Fixes

01

Unify the icons

Aligned icon style for consistency.

02

Add “Delete” feature

Users can now delete read messages by swiping, keeping the page clean and uncluttered.

Improvements

01

Prioritize by urgency & importance

We organized information by urgency and importance, placing high-priority messages at the top.

02

Highlight the important

Important messages, like warnings, now have a themed background color to stand out.

03

Categorize information

Similar information is now labeled and grouped together for easier navigation.

04

Fold Similar type

We folded similar types of messages, similar to the iOS notification system, to reduce clutter.

Outcome

Urgent notifications were always prioritized at the top.

Achieved visual consistency throughout the interface.

Implemented a delete feature, allowing users to clean read notifications easily.

Testing

But did it work?

The redesign is still in progress, and constantly being iterated on. With the new components that were implemented, has it improved the overall user experience? The users gave me some insights into what was working and what wasn’t

🙌 Wins:

  • The UI became cleaner.

  • Message status was clear.

  • Important information was noticed.

🤔 Lose:

  • Users found accessing specific messages within groups inefficient and frustrating.

  • Feedback pop-ups were unengaging.

Remaining Problems

User satisfaction with notifications didn’t improve significantly. A better organization method was needed.

Research

Revised Approach

  • Identified that users frequently check certain types of messages more than others.

  • Decided to make these messages more prominent and easily accessible.

What Key Messages Users Care About?

Shoutouts

Comments

We found out that there are some messages that users tend to click and check more often than other messages. So why not make this information stand out and let people easily access them?

Second Iteration

01

Stand out the popular messages

Added filters for shoutouts and comments to improve access efficiency

Used window view to improve visual organization.

02

Boost Engagement

Introduced interactive pop-up animations to enhance user interaction.

Designed two illustrations aligned with the app’s color palette and style.

  • Warnings were wordy and dry.

Impact

How do we measure success?

📈

Click rate increased by over 30%.

😉

Users expressed more confidence in using the notification system.

🌟

Interactive pop-ups became one of the favorite features
